About the Artist

I first picked up a paintbrush as an adult student at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, Washington, after retiring from a 20-year career as a writer and editor. That first still life class was in 2002, and over the years, I have had the good fortune to study at Gage with numerous gifted teachers who are, first and foremost, accomplished and exceptional artists.

‘KERIS’ is an artistic nom de plume and how I sign my work. It has special significance because it is my first name followed by the first letter of my middle name, the first letter of my married name, and the email identity I was closely associated with during my career -- so much so, that many people never called me by my real name.

Still life is my preferred genre. I find deep satisfaction in celebrating ordinary objects and giving them a life easily overlooked in an everyday world. Although most of my work is painting in oil, colored pencil and graphite are rewarding media to work with, as well, and lend their own characteristics to a particular piece.
